Fun Greeting Cards - Father's Day Cards
A greeting card says it all. It says the important things in life.

Singing Birthday Cards

Father's Day was created by Mrs. John B. Dodd of Washington. Apparently, she simply wanted  a day to honor her father.

It seems her dad was widowed when his wife, passed away during childbirth and left him with 6 children to raise. When she became an adult, Mrs. Dodd realized the strength and caring of her father during those years. It was her way of showing her appreciation
to him.

Father's Day was first celebrated in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. President Calvin Coolidge recognized a national Father's Day in 1924 but it wasn't until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson proclaimed the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day.

10 Great Gift Ideas for Father's Day
by Adriana Copaceanu

What do you get for the man who has always been there for you? You want it to be something special, something he hasn't gotten before, something that he will cherish. It cannot be the tired old gift of after shave lotion or soap on a rope. Not this year!

To start your idea list, think about the things you used to do or still do together. Think about the "firsts" he added to your life; the first baseball game, the first boat ride, how he helped you get your balance on your first bike, how he showed you it was fun to play the piano, your first hunting or fishing trip. Make a list of the things he does now or things you've heard him talk about doing but has never done. Somewhere in this list is the perfect gift for the man who has been your Father all these years.

1. For the sailing dad, get him a hand carved scaled model of the winning sailing boat of the America's cup to proudly display in his office or den.

2. If he still has his grandfather's pocket watch, get him a leather covered case to display it.

3. Your retired Dad spends a lot of his time traveling in his RV. Get him a pair of moccasins made from moose hide. They are comfortable and have extra grip soles for his safety.

4. If he collects small model cars or trains, get a display cabinet that will hold and show off his treasures.

5. If he rides the subway, get him cufflinks with the subway token in display.

6. For the man who showed you how to wish on the moon, give him an acre of Lunar Real Estate. He will get a certificate in the mail.

7. If he showed you the constellations, get him a telescope so he can easily gaze at the stars.

8. If his hands are always busy working on the computer keyboard, give him a squeezable ball to help relieve tension and work different muscles. They come in all sizes now from the baseball to huge ones that will work his shoulder muscles.

9. Did your Dad use to take you quail hunting? Give him a gourmet meal of roasted quail. They come vacuum sealed with all the juices.

10. You can also find a silver plated mouse for his computer and have his initials engraved on it.

Father's Day
by Dr. Dorree Lynn

BASEBALL MEMORIES
A DAUGHTER’S TALE

My father wanted a son. I understood that from the time I could intuit those secret messages that children know without knowing they know. My dad loved me. I also knew that. But, raising a daughter was foreign to him. Certainly, it wasn’t his first choice. So, in the ways that a child tries to please a parent, I tried to please him, to fulfill and give him what he wished for. It worked up to a point. Although in later years he was proud of me, for most of our life together, he was never comfortable around me.

Baseball was king in New York City when I was a small child, and although my dad was an inveterate Dodger’s fan, we lived near the Yankee Stadium and it was there we bonded as much as we were ever able to. Warm weekends, when he was free, we went to the game. I looked forward to going with him. The hotdog vendors, and cotton candy, peanuts and all the junk food my mother never knew about — a shared secret that made the day just that much sweeter, that much more special. Sometimes he remembered how small I was and he reached out to hold my hand. Sometimes, he got caught up in the excitement of the game, forgetting he had a young daughter to take care of. I understood that too, and in those moments I reached up to touch his hand, sometimes wrapping my small fingers around his larger ones, reminding him of my presence.

I learned the game well along with the roster of great Yankee and Dodger players, with a few others thrown in: Yogi Berra, Pee Wee Reese, Joe DiMaggio, Whitey Ford, Satchel Paige and of course, the heroic Jackie Robinson. I watched the plays, the miraculously caught high pop fly balls, the catcher (Yogi) always in control, the umps calling their balls and strikes, the seventh inning stretch when I was more than ready to go home. And, sometimes, a shared ice cream sundae, one more secret indulgence, before returning home.

My mother never understood the specialness of these outings. Actually, neither of my parent’s did. She knew I was away for the day and therefore I was not underfoot. And, he had a companion, not the son he wanted, but I did the best I could to give him the joy he wished for. Baseball became our bond as it also became part of my lifeblood.

Father’s Day, 2001 years after both my parent’s death: They are gone but baseball is still with me. The guys in my psychotherapy practice are often surprised at how much I know and how passionate I get discussing the game. We wander into discussions of how much the game has changed. We debate the appropriateness of the player’s now mega salaries. We argue plays and groan or applaud a home run. The men who have entrusted their lives to my professional skills and I bond. I have my dad’s baseball education to thank for that ability. I could never be the son he wanted. I haven’t forgotten the pain of always knowing that. But, for the now grownup grandmother who as a small girl tried to be what her dad wanted, baseball remains. I am grateful for that gift.

Life is too hard to do alone,

The Spirit of Father's Day
by Lawrence Vijay Girard

Some time ago I received a gift from both of my children. It was spontaneous and had nothing to do with Father’s day. Yet, at the same time it had everything to do with Father’s day.
My son, Kai, - he was 17 at the time - was attending a private boarding high school in Colorado. While we were talking on the phone he shared some wonderful news with me.

Kai said, ”You know Dad, I am really happy with my life. I can’t think of a thing that I would change about the way that I grew up, or the way that my life is now.”

My daughter Sabari, - also 17 at the time ...yes, twins! - , who was living with her mother in Northern California, said almost the same thing to me just a few days later.

Of course, I was delighted to hear this from both of them. What parent wouldn’t revel in the good spirits of their children. And I told them both how happy I was, not only that they were happy, but that they expressed it to me. The heartfelt communication that we shared is as dear to me as the news itself.

And that, I reflected, was the gift that they were giving me. The gift of heartfelt, open, communication. Certainly I hope for good news when I hear from them. But mostly I love that they will share their real feelings with me. Happy or sad, I love to be touched by their innermost thoughts and feelings. That is how I can really share in their lives.

The spontaneous sharing of my children reminded me of our relationship with Spirit. Our open, honest, heartfelt innermost thoughts and feelings flowing towards our Creator, good news or bad, is at the foundation of our ability to have a real conscious relationship with God.

Many people think that God is present only at a distance. Some think that if God is any way knowable, that knowledge can only come after death. But the saints of all religions have proclaimed that God is knowable here and now if we will just take the time to communicate with Him/Her.

Unfortunately many religious traditions have lost touch with this most essential truth. It isn’t satisfying to the soul to just read or talk about our connection with Spirit. We yearn to actually experience the reality of our relationship with God.

As an earthly father and a child of my Infinite Father I offer this Father’s Day gift to you. A simple reminder that God is real and present in your life. Consciously enter into your relationship with Spirit by inwardly having a conversation with Him/Her during the day. Let God be your inner companion and friend. Let this communication be natural and heartfelt. You don’t have to make deep pronouncements to God - unless you really want to. Experiment with the type of exchange that feels most comfortable to you. The only really essential part of this is that it must be sincere. Even sincere doubt is better than insincere praise.

The highest form of communication is that which bridges the gap between those communicating  creating oneness. It is this experience of oneness that we long for with our loved ones and with God. When we can perfect our inner communication with Spirit we will consciously realize our oneness with all life - everywhere. This won’t be an abstract concept but an actual experience.

For a child, Father’s day isn’t really about giving Dad a gift. It is about recognizing the gift of caring that fathers express when they help put food on the table, teach their child to ride a bike, cheer at a soccer game, smile at a graduation, give their daughter’s hand in marriage, giggle with a grandchild, and most importantly, act as a channel for God’s love to flow through them into the lives of their children.

For a father, Father’s day isn’t so much about taking the accolades of a job well done (even though they may be well deserved!), but about giving thanks for the opportunity to give. And remember, the greatest gift that we give our children is the actual expression of our love. It isn’t enough to feel love for them inside ourselves: we need to express that love. Take a moment each day and give your child the kind of hug that can leave no doubt that you really treasure their presence in your life.
Of course, the greatest Dad of all is the father of all life. So let’s take some time this Father’s day to remember our Heavenly Father. Let’s share our innermost hopes, dreams, challenges, temporary setbacks, and victories. And once we have had our say, let’s listen carefully: For God, the Father of us all, may have a gift in store for us, the gift of awareness of His Infinite Loving Presence in our lives.
