The Attitude of
Gratitude
by Jack Cronin
“Feeling grateful or appreciative of
someone or something in your life actually attracts more of the things that
you appreciate or value into your life.” ~Northrup Christiane~
The quotation above contains two powerful
concepts. The first being that appreciating what we already have adds value to
our lives. The second concept is the concept of attraction which says that by
being grateful for what we already have we’ll actually attract even more of
those things into our lives. How great is that? If we stop and take the time
to value and appreciate what we already have, then we won’t have to
continually push ourselves to make more, buy more, and have more. It’s your
life. Which path will you chose?
Most of the time we are all guilty of taking for granted all that we have. To
highlight how lucky we all are I’d like to spend a few moments talking about
what it is that we really need to survive. The word “need” has become one of
the most misused words in the English language. Mirriam-Webster’s Dictionary
defines need as “lack of the means of subsistence”. With that definition in
mind, when was the last time you heard the word need used correctly? According
to that definition the word need should be used with terms like food, water,
and shelter. These are the things we require for subsistence.
When we hear the word need use with terms like Game Boy Color, a long
vacation, or a night out we must train ourselves to realize that all these
things are extras. We’ve come to the point where we don’t even think about our
basic needs. The bulk of our time, effort and money is now spent on extras and
there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. The fact that our basic needs are
met is great. This month though let’s take the time to appreciate how
fortunate we are and to be more thankful for all that we have.
The second concept of gratitude actually helping to attract more of what we
want into our lives can be difficult to understand if we only think of it from
the perspective of receiving. What if we change our point of view to giving?
Think about some of the gifts that you give or some of the favors that you do
for others. How are they received? I’m sure we all know someone who hasn’t
quite perfected the art of receiving gifts. You know the person who says
“Thank you”, but you know they either won’t use it or will return it to the
store for something else. What is your reaction to that true lack of
gratitude? Are you anxious to give them something else? I doubt it! That
person certainly isn’t attracting more into their lives, because they aren’t
truly grateful.
If you truly want to see what gratitude means, then find a way to meet
someone’s basic needs. This experience will be a two way gift. The gratitude
you’ll receive from filling another person’s basic need will overwhelm you and
it will also make you that much more grateful for all that you have. This
can’t be done long distance though. If you want to get the full effect, you’ll
need to be there and see the person’s reaction. Find a way to deliver a meal
to someone who needs it or deliver a Christmas gift to a child who otherwise
wouldn’t get one. Do this once, and you’ll want to do it every year. Feel the
attraction of pure gratitude for filling another’s basic need.
